On this site you'll find links to a variety of audio and video files which have been created to support your learning. We're adding to these files on a very regular basis - so this site should be worth revisiting. In the meantime, if there's something you'd particularly like to see here then let us know.
First of all, here are a few links which might be useful to anybody, regardless of the course they're on -
| Express Scribe | Express Scribe is a useful piece of free software which will help you if you ever have to transcribe an audio or video tape. Essentially, it allows you to save an audio file onto your computer and then play that file back from within your word processor - much easier than messing about with the controls on your tape deck. It won't do the typing for you, but it does make the whole process of doing that very much easier. We're providing a link to the download site here, plus a short video showing you how to download, install and use it. |
| Flash Player | You'll need the Flash 8 player or later to play any of the videos on this site. The software is free to download and easy to install. |
| iTunes | Your computer will almost certainly have come with a programme that will play MP3 files pre-installed on it but, just in case, here's one that will play on both PCs and Macs. If you've got an iPod you'll have this anyway, because this is the programme that transfers the files from your computer to the iPod. |
| How not to fail assessments | And here's an MP3 file to play! We asked a number of lecturers what advice they would give to someone confronted by an assessment - this is what they said. (running time 9 minutes) |
While these are the files that have been created to support various subject areas -
Counselling and Communication Skills |
|---|
| :are you in Zennor? | Does your work bring you into contact with people with problems? This video will show you how you can use counselling skills to help them with those problems - and do your job more effectively. Whether you are in the early stages of counselling training or just wanting to improve your communication skills this video is just what you need. It will show you how to - listen and show that you're listening, create the right kind of helping environment, use questions appropriately, recognise the importance of what you bring to a helping relationship
It demonstrates a range of basic skills, explains what you need to be aware of when using those skills and gives clear and entertaining examples of good and bad practice. |
Good Practice-Bad Practice (Counselling Skills in the Workplace) |
This video illustrates good and bad practice in action. It gives you an opportunity to look at two alternative responses to the same client material. We see a key worker discussing a work issue with his manager in an unscripted role play. In the first of these the manager does not use counselling or communication skills, in the second one she does. There is an opportunity for you to make your own analysis of what happens and the sessions are striped with a time-code to help you in this process. You’ll then see the sessions again with a commentary which points out the strengths and weaknesses of the two approaches |
Supervision |
|---|
| Broadband Video | Demonstration One - Page & Wosket (running time 28 minutes) This is a pretty beefy file and you're going to need broadband to watch the video. If you don't have that you'll probably be better off just listening to the mp3 file. Don't forget you'll need the Flash 8 Player (see above) for the video. |
|
| Broadband Video | Demonstration Two - Three Step Model incorporating Seven Eyed Model (running time 22 minutes) Technical details as bove. |
Social Work |
|---|
| A Social Worker Calls | Three Social Work students and one lecturer were presented with the briefing sheet that you'll see transcribed below. They were given a few minutes to think through the way in which they would approach their meeting with “Mrs Jackson”, and then each took part in the unscripted roll play that you'll find on this video. You might find it useful to pause after each meeting, so that you can consider the strengths and weaknesses of each of their approaches. Before you do, though, you might want to consider how you would approach such a meeting….. “Mrs. Jackson contacted the Social Work duty team on Thursday 21st October 2005. Mrs. Jackson lives in her mothers house with her elderly mother in a rural area and does not drive. She is the main carer for her mother, Mrs. Anchor, and has cared for her for several years on her own. Mrs. Jackson was quite tearful on the telephone saying that she was finding it a struggle to look after her mother, who is hard of hearing and becoming less independent. Mrs. Jackson told the duty social worker that she feels very depressed and isolated. She does the cooking, washing, shopping and caring for her mother. Mrs. Jackson has no children and is divorced. She has told the duty social worker that she has not had any time to herself for several months as her mother has been deteriorating a lot. Her nearest close friends live in Pontypridd and she rarely sees them unless they can get someone to drive them to Mrs. Jackson?s home. The duty social worker has informed Mrs. Jackson that a social worker will visit. The social work team has allocated the case to you and written to inform Mrs. Jackson that you will be visiting her this morning. This will be your first contact with Mrs. Jackson.” (running time 22 minutes 37 seconds) |
